Mormon View of the BIble

Mormons today claim they are a Christian church. On their official website they make the claim that the Book of Mormon "supports and verifies the Bible 1." They claim that they are indeed Christian and that they "believe in the Jesus of the New Testament 2." However, when you examine the teachings of their doctrine, you find that this is not actually true. Mormons do claim to believe the Bible, but they do not believe the Bible, as we know it, is inerrant. In fact, they believe it has been defiled and changed. Here is what Joseph Smith said about the Bible.

"I believe the Bible as it read when it came from the pen of the original writers. Ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors."3

This is why the LDS churches eighth article of faith reads:

"We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God." 4

While we would all agree that a proper translation is necessary, the Mormon church is not teaching here that we need to translate the language correctly, for they believe that the Bible has been corrupted, even in the manuscripts that are available to us. They believe it is the prophets job to interpret the Bible correctly.

"A prophet speaks for God, with divine power and authority. He:...Teaches the gospel and interprets the word of God" 5

While the Mormons claim to be Christian they admit that they do not believe everything the Bible says because they believe it has been corrupted. According to their teachings, their prophets alone are able to interpret the Bible correctly. The page quoted above also says, "A prophet speaks for God, with divine power and authority." He is a special witness communicating God's will to the people and "receives revelations and directions from the Lord." Their claim of truth is based upon the revelations of their prophets, not the Bible. When the Bible conflicts with church doctrine, they look to their prophet for the correct teaching, not in Scripture alone.

Matt 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

The Mormon church wants you to believe that we cannot know if these words are correct or not, because the say Bible was corrupted. Jesus, however, told us that His words would never pass away. When a Mormon claims to believe the Bible, we must realize they only believe what their Prophets tell them to believe about it. They do not believe the Bible as it has been presented and preserved. The Bible is the inerrant Word of God in the original languages and the Lord has kept his Word, it has not been corrupted and it has not passed away.

Isa 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall,
but the word of our God stands forever."
