The Problem With Modern Day Prophets

I read in the news the other day that Pat Robertson made the following statement:

"If I heard the Lord right about 2006, the coasts of America will be lashed by storms," Robertson said May 8. Wednesday, he added, "there well may be something as bad as a tsunami in the Pacific Northwest." (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,195931,00.html)

We have to ask ourselves is God really speaking to this man? Look at the example of the prophets in the Bible. Did any of them ever doubt that they heard God right? Do they ever give any indication that they could be mistaken? No. In fact we are told that if a prophet speaks something that does not come to pass then we know that God did not speak through that person at all (Deut. 18:22) . The prophets who did speak for the Lord declared His word boldly by saying “The Lord said!” There was no doubt, no reservation, and certainly no question about whether or not they got it right. The Lord spoke and they told us exactly what God said. How could the Bible be considered valid otherwise?

Another reason we should doubt such prophesies is that they predict things that are already expected to happen. The coasts of America will be lashed with storms. Well, let me ask you, has there been any year in which hurricanes did not hit at least some of our coastlines? Typically the answer is no. Some years might be milder but usually one or more storms do hit the coasts of America. The past few years have been specifically violent and even scientists who have no belief in God are expecting a busy season. In fact, it would be more miraculous for America to NOT be hit by storms than for it to be lashed by them. What makes the prophecies of God so incredible was that they were usually not the expected or normal outcome. However, Pat Robertson would have us to believe that God needed to warn us through Him about what most every American already thinks is going to happen anyway.

That is the way it is with most modern day prophets. Pat Robertson is also well known for getting Words of Knowledge of people who have been supposedly healed of one illness or another. Again, you never hear of a rare disease being mentioned, but always things such as cancer or heart disease in which someone in an audience the size of his broadcast ministry is likely to have. There is also never any follow up to see if his Word was ever verified. We have no way of checking his accountability. Remember, if he speaks a false prophecy just once, then we know he was not speaking from God at all.

Of course we know that the Bible tells us that God does not speak through prophets anymore. That was something He did in the past, before He sent His Son.

Heb 1:1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son , whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. NIV

As we have clearly pointed out in previous articles, the gifts of the Spirit have ceased and therefore there are no modern day prophets. Pat Robertson is just helping to validate that point. Not only has the Bible told us that he no longer speaks this way, the prophets of today themselves are not sure they are “hearing God correctly” which we know means they have not heard Him at all. Believe me, If God speaks you will know it. Remain vigilant and test everything you hear against the Word of God.
